A growing share of your customers no longer open ten blue links. They ask an assistant, read one synthesized answer, and maybe click the sources under it. If your business is not in that answer, you were not in the running. Answer engine optimization, AEO, is the craft of getting there.
What actually changed
Classic search ranks pages and lets the user judge. Answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI results do the judging themselves: they retrieve a handful of sources, synthesize one answer, and cite where it came from. Three consequences matter for anyone who runs a website:
- Fewer clicks, higher intent. People who click through from an AI answer already trust you; the assistant vouched for you.
- Winner-takes-most citations. An answer cites three to six sources, not a page of results. Position eleven used to get scraps. Now position seven gets nothing.
- Being quotable beats being long. Engines lift the passage that answers the question cleanly. Pages that bury the answer under scene-setting lose to pages that lead with it.
How answer engines choose their sources
Behind every AI answer is retrieval: the engine searches, pulls candidate pages, and picks passages to ground its response. The pages that win share traits you can engineer:
- Direct answers up front. The first sentence under a heading answers the heading. Detail and nuance follow, not the other way around.
- Verifiable specifics. Numbers, dates, prices, place names. "We deliver apps in 8 to 14 weeks" is quotable; "fast delivery" is not.
- Machine-readable identity. Structured data that says plainly who you are, what you sell, and where you operate.
- Consistency across the web. Engines cross-check. If your address, name or offering differs between your site, your socials and business registries, you read as uncertain and get skipped.
- Crawlability. If AI crawlers are blocked or your content only exists inside JavaScript that never renders server-side, you are invisible at step one.
Making a site answerable
Structure pages around questions
Take the questions customers actually ask, one per section, phrased in the heading the way a person would ask it. Answer in the first sentence, then expand. This is not writing for robots; it is the structure a hurried human reader wants too, which is exactly why retrieval rewards it.
Ship structured data
Schema.org markup in JSON-LD is the cheapest AEO win available. The essentials for a service business: Organization or LocalBusiness with address and contact, Service for each offering, Article on posts like this one, and FAQPage where you genuinely answer questions. Emerging conventions like an llms.txt file cost minutes to add and give crawlers a curated map of what matters on your site.
Publish facts only you can publish
Answer engines are allergic to content that exists everywhere. Generic listicles get synthesized away; your real numbers, your process, your case results get cited. A studio that writes "a typical car wash finder app took us 11 weeks and three App Store review cycles" gives an engine something it cannot get anywhere else.
SEO asked: what do people search? AEO asks: what will the machine quote? Honest, specific, well-structured pages win both.
What to measure
- Assistant referrals. Watch analytics for traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and Google's AI surfaces. Small numbers today, but the trend line is the signal.
- Citation checks. Once a month, ask the major assistants the five questions that should lead to your business. Log who gets cited. This is the new rank tracking.
- Fact drift. Periodically ask assistants what they know about your company. Wrong answers usually trace back to inconsistent or stale information you can fix at the source.
AEO is SEO done honestly
Almost everything above was already good practice: clear structure, direct language, real facts, consistent identity, working markup. The difference is enforcement. Search engines tolerated bloated content for years. Answer engines simply skip it. The sites that treated clarity as a courtesy now find it was infrastructure.
We build sites with this baked in: semantic structure, structured data, server-rendered content and copy that leads with answers. If you want to know how your business currently shows up in AI answers, ask us for an AEO audit. It starts with the same five questions your customers are already asking.
